Is Bitstamp available in Canada?
As of June 2026 Bitstamp is not available to residents of Canada. Bitstamp wound down its Canadian service and transferred Canadian client accounts to a locally registered platform in 2024. Canadian securities regulators require crypto trading platforms to register, and Bitstamp does not hold that registration.

How we checked this. We set this status by reading the platform's own terms of use and country eligibility, and the public register kept by the named regulator, then dated the result. Availability can change, so confirm directly with the platform and the regulator before acting. As of 26 June 2026.
As of June 2026 Bitstamp is not available to residents of Canada. Bitstamp wound down its Canadian operation and moved Canadian client accounts to a locally registered platform in 2024, after Canada tightened the rules requiring crypto trading platforms to register with securities regulators. Holding and trading crypto is legal in Canada, but residents use platforms that are registered to operate there. Because Bitstamp is not available to Canadian residents, we do not link it for Canada.
Is the platform available to residents
As of June 2026 Bitstamp does not serve residents of Canada. Canada tightened its approach to crypto trading platforms across 2022 and 2023, requiring platforms that serve Canadians to register with provincial securities regulators and to file a binding pre registration undertaking in the meantime. Rather than complete that registration, Bitstamp wound down its Canadian service and transferred its Canadian client accounts to a platform registered in Canada in 2024.
There is therefore no route for a new Canadian resident to open and fund a Bitstamp account as of June 2026. This page does not provide a sign up path or an affiliate link for Bitstamp in Canada. Availability can change if a platform completes Canadian registration, so this is the position as of June 2026.
The regulator and the framework
Crypto trading platforms that serve Canadians are regulated as securities and derivatives dealers. The Canadian Securities Administrators, the umbrella body for the provincial and territorial regulators, set the policy, and provincial regulators such as the Ontario Securities Commission supervise registration. Platforms are expected to register, often initially as a restricted dealer, and to file a pre registration undertaking while their application is assessed. Separately, money services businesses register with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada, known as FINTRAC.
Bitstamp did not complete this registration and chose to exit the Canadian market, migrating its Canadian accounts to a registered Canadian platform, publicly reported as Bitbuy, in April 2024. Holding and trading crypto remains legal for Canadians as of June 2026 through registered platforms. Because Bitstamp is not registered to serve Canadian residents, the platform is not within compliant reach of Canadian users.
How residents access the platform
There is no available route for Canadian residents to use Bitstamp as of June 2026. Because Bitstamp exited Canada and does not hold the required registration, new residents cannot complete onboarding or fund an account in Canadian dollars through the platform. Former Canadian Bitstamp users were transitioned to a registered Canadian platform during 2024. We do not describe workarounds, because using a platform that is not registered to serve your country can conflict with the platform terms and local rules.
Canadian residents who want to buy and hold crypto compliantly use a platform registered with the provincial securities regulators and FINTRAC. See the best exchanges in Canada page for platforms that are genuinely available there.
Tax treatment
Tax on crypto for Canadian taxpayers is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. As a general matter, crypto is treated as a commodity, and a disposal can produce a capital gain or, where the activity amounts to a business, business income, with reporting obligations on each taxable transaction. This page does not give tax advice. For general information see the Canada tax page, and confirm your own position with a qualified local professional before filing.
Bitstamp is not available to Canadian residents as of June 2026, so we do not link it here.
