Quick answer

As of June 2026 Coinbase is available to Canadian residents and operates as a registered restricted dealer, with the Ontario Securities Commission as principal regulator under the Canadian Securities Administrators framework. Registration was first granted in April 2024, and Coinbase is working toward full investment dealer registration and membership of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization. Residents can fund in Canadian dollars and trade a broad list of assets, though products and fees change, so confirm the current position before acting.

Availability

Is the platform available to residents

As of June 2026 Coinbase is available to residents of Canada. Canadian users can register, complete identity verification, fund in Canadian dollars, and trade a broad range of crypto assets through the Coinbase app and website.

Coinbase operates within the Canadian framework rather than at its edge. It signed an enhanced undertaking with the regulators in March 2023 and in April 2024 became a registered restricted dealer, which it described as making it the first international exchange registered in Canada (as of June 2026).

Regulation

The regulator and the framework

Coinbase is registered as a restricted dealer with the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) acting as principal regulator under the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) framework, with the registration recognised across the provinces and territories through the passport system (as of June 2026).

The relief granted under the original 2024 decision was time limited and expired on 3 April 2026. Coinbase applied to the OSC and to Quebec's Autorité des marchés financiers to register as an investment dealer, and to the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) for dealer membership, and it sought an extension to continue operating on an interim basis as a restricted dealer while that process completes. As of June 2026 Coinbase continues to operate as a registered restricted dealer in Canada, so confirm its current registration status on the OSC registry before acting.

Access and products

How residents access the platform

Residents access Coinbase in Canada through its app and website after completing know your customer verification, which the Canadian anti money laundering regime requires. Funding in Canadian dollars is supported through common local methods.

The product set centres on buying, selling, and holding a broad list of crypto assets, with staking and other features offered in some cases and subject to the limits in Coinbase's Canadian registration. Coinbase is a custodial platform, so it holds account assets on the user's behalf. The exact products, supported assets, and fees change over time, so confirm what is offered to a Canadian account before trading (as of June 2026).
