Is KuCoin available in the Netherlands?

Not available to new Dutch customers

As of June 2026 KuCoin is not available to new Dutch customers. KuCoin exited the Dutch market after De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) found it had operated without the required registration, and although KuCoin's European entity later obtained a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) licence in Austria, the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) prohibited that entity from onboarding new customers in February 2026. Confirm the current position on the AFM and ESMA registers.

Quick answer

As of June 2026 a new Dutch resident cannot open a KuCoin account. KuCoin, operated by Peken Global Limited, did not hold the registration that De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) required, and in 2024 DNB imposed an order subject to penalty for offering crypto services in the Netherlands without that registration. KuCoin then blocked new Dutch users from 30 September 2024 and moved existing Dutch accounts to withdrawal only by August 2025. KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH obtained a MiCA licence in Austria in late November 2025, which can in principle be passported, but in February 2026 the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) prohibited the entity from onboarding new customers over compliance staffing shortfalls. Because the platform is not available to new Dutch customers, this page does not show a compare module for KuCoin. Confirm the current position on the AFM and ESMA registers.

Availability

Is the platform available to residents

As of June 2026 KuCoin does not offer onboarding to new Dutch customers. KuCoin announced that new users from the Netherlands could no longer register from 30 September 2024, and that existing Dutch accounts would move to a withdrawal only mode by August 2025, ending trading and deposits for those users.

KuCoin's European entity, KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH, obtained a MiCA crypto asset service provider licence from the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) in late November 2025, which in principle can be passported across the European Economic Area. However, in February 2026 the FMA prohibited the entity from onboarding new customers and conducting new business after it lost key function holders for anti money laundering, counter terrorist financing, and sanctions compliance. Because of that restriction, a new Dutch resident cannot open an account, so confirm the current position on the AFM and European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) registers before acting (as of June 2026).

Regulation

The regulator and the framework

The Netherlands supervises crypto on a Twin Peaks model. De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) historically ran the registration regime for crypto service providers focused on anti money laundering, and the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) is the conduct authority and the Dutch competent authority under MiCA. DNB found that Peken Global Limited, operating as KuCoin, offered crypto services in the Netherlands without the legally required registration, and imposed an order subject to penalty in 2024.

Since 30 December 2024 the European Union Markets in Crypto Assets regulation, known as MiCA, applies to crypto asset service providers across the bloc, coordinated with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and a licence granted in one member state can in principle be passported. KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH holds an Austrian FMA licence, but the FMA restriction announced in February 2026 prevents the entity from taking on new customers. The Dutch transitional period for providers under the former DNB regime ended on 30 June 2025, so confirm the current status on the AFM and ESMA registers (as of June 2026).

Access and products

How residents are affected

Because new onboarding is blocked, KuCoin's products are not offered to a new Dutch account. New Dutch registrations have been closed since 30 September 2024, and existing Dutch users were moved to a withdrawal only mode during 2025, which generally means no further trading, deposits, or new purchases.

If you previously held assets on KuCoin as a Dutch user, follow the platform's guidance on withdrawals and keep records. To act through a regulated channel now, use a provider that is authorised and available in the Netherlands. The position can change if KuCoin's European entity satisfies the FMA and resumes onboarding, so confirm the current status with KuCoin, the AFM, and ESMA before acting (as of June 2026).

Tax

Tax treatment

Tax on crypto for Dutch residents is administered by the Belastingdienst, the Netherlands Tax Administration. Holdings are generally reported under the Box 3 regime that taxes wealth, while activity that amounts to a business or to income can fall under other boxes. This page does not give tax advice. For how crypto is treated in the Netherlands in general terms, see the Netherlands tax page, and confirm your own position with a qualified local professional before filing (as of June 2026).
