How we checked this. We set this status by reading the platform's own terms of use and country eligibility, and the public register kept by the named regulator, then dated the result. Availability can change, so confirm directly with the platform and the regulator before acting. As of 26 June 2026.
As of June 2026 OKX is not available to Canadian residents. OKX told Canadian users it would stop providing services and new account openings from 24 March 2023, citing new regulations, and gave users until 22 June 2023 to close positions and withdraw. It has not returned to the Canadian market, so Canadians who want a registered platform can look to exchanges that hold restricted dealer registration in Canada.
Is the platform available to residents
As of June 2026 OKX is not available to residents of Canada. OKX notified Canadian users that it would stop providing services and allow no new account openings from 24 March 2023, and it gave users a window until 22 June 2023 to close any open positions and withdraw their funds.
OKX pointed to new regulations as the reason and said at the time that its withdrawal could be temporary. As of June 2026 OKX has not returned to serve Canadian residents and is not registered with Canadian securities regulators, so there is no compliant way to open a new account from Canada.
The regulator and the framework
Canada regulates crypto asset trading platforms through the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and the provincial and territorial securities regulators, with the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) a leading authority. Platforms that serve Canadian residents are expected to register and to operate under securities law, and products such as margin and derivatives are restricted for retail users (as of June 2026).
From 2022 the CSA asked platforms to give an undertaking to work toward registration as a condition of continuing to serve Canadians. On 6 August 2024 the CSA ended that interim approach for time limited restricted dealer registration, and new platforms now apply directly to the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). Anti money laundering obligations are separately overseen, and platforms that handle fiat typically register as a money services business with the federal financial intelligence unit (as of June 2026).
How residents are affected
Because OKX is not available in Canada, there is no compliant way for a Canadian resident to open a new OKX account. Any service that claims to provide OKX access to Canadians, for example through a virtual private network or a third party, sits outside the registered framework and carries legal and counterparty risk.
Canadians who want to use a registered platform can look to exchanges that hold restricted dealer registration with Canadian securities regulators. Coinbase and Kraken are two platforms that are registered and available to Canadian residents (as of June 2026).
Tax treatment
Tax on crypto for Canadian residents is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and a tax liability can arise on disposals even where the platform used is offshore. This page does not give tax advice. For how crypto is treated in Canada in general terms, see the Canada tax page, and confirm your own position with a qualified local professional before filing.
OKX is not available to Canadian residents, so this page links to platforms that are genuinely available and registered in Canada, not to OKX. Compare the exchanges that hold registration in Canada before you choose.
